Dong Nguyen, the creator of the wildly popular mobile game Flappy Bird, recently resurfaced on social media to deny any involvement in rumors about a possible GameFi relaunch of his game. Originally released in 2013, Flappy Bird quickly became a viral sensation due to its simple yet challenging gameplay, which required players to navigate a small bird between pipes. However, the game’s rapid rise to fame brought Nguyen considerable distress. He eventually pulled the game from the Apple App Store and Google Play in February 2014, citing its addictive nature and the personal pressure it caused him. Nguyen expressed discomfort with how the game impacted players, as well as concerns about accusations that he had copied art from Nintendo.
After nearly a decade of silence regarding the game, Nguyen’s ownership of the Flappy Bird trademark came under scrutiny. In 2022, Gametech Holdings filed a motion claiming that the trademark had been abandoned due to the game’s absence from virtual stores. When Nguyen did not respond to the challenge, a U.S. trademark court granted Gametech a default judgment, effectively allowing others to take over the brand.
More recently, cybersecurity researcher Varun Biniwale uncovered deleted pages on the Flappy Bird website that referenced blockchain projects like Solana and a $FLAP token, hinting at the creation of a “Flap-to-Earn” mode. This sparked speculation about the game’s potential relaunch as a crypto-integrated GameFi product. Michael Roberts, one of the developers linked to the project, suggested that more details would emerge soon. However, Nguyen took to social media to clarify that he had no involvement with the project, had not sold any rights to the game, and did not endorse its connection to cryptocurrency.
Community members further confirmed that the new team behind the game’s relaunch had acquired the rights due to Nguyen’s inactivity, not through a direct transaction. This situation has sparked discussions about intellectual property rights and the ethical implications of repurposing Flappy Bird without the original creator’s consent. Nguyen’s clear disavowal underscores his discomfort with both the fame the game brought him and the recent crypto-related developments
